Is it possible to download Times Crosswords for free?
I assume you mean the puzzles in The Times (of London)
or the New York Times. There are other papers with
'Times' in their title, commonly known as 'the Times'
in their country or area.

You can only get these puzzles free if someone
somewhere is breaching copyright.

For the Times, you have to join their crossword
club at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/crossword
There are two levels of subscription - if you just
want the daily cryptic and 'Concise' puzzle and their
Sunday equivalents, it will cost you GBP 9.99 -
about 3p a day. For GBP 24.95 - about 8p a day, you
get much more. You can try the premium
service for a month for GBP 4.95. I've got the
premium membership and although the club website
could be improved in various ways, I'd count it
as good value.

The NY Times equivalent is at
http://www.nytimes.com/pages/crosswords/
You get the choice of a monthly (USD 5.95)
or annual (USD 34.95) sub, for a deal that looks
roughly equivalent to the premium one at the Times.

Yes Sir, I am indeed talking about The Times of London. I am aware that
you can get it from the official website if you were willing to part
with the modest fee you mentioned.

I've been doing crosswords for a little while now. Since I live in
Australia (and travel to New Zealand for work) I've been doing the
Sydney Morning Herald and New Zealand Herald fairly regularly. I find
them fairly easy and I would like to step up to the Times but I was
first hoping I could do a few samplers and see if I can cut it before I
subscribed.

SMH to the Times is a big jump. You might like to look at something
in-between like the premium crossword service offered by Fairfax (available
from the SMH website). If you'd like to have a go at the Times, you could
buy The Australian which carries it every day.

You're too modest, David. The OP should forget the Times, buy the Sydney
Daily Telegraph, pull out the puzzle page, rest it on the remainder of the
paper (which is not to be read), and do 'The Stickler'. It's harder, fairer,
more interesting and just _better_ than the Herald puzzles, and you still
get the Australian references which are missing from the Times's puzzles.
Try it.

"Forget the Times" is a bit parochial. I'd say: support the best
puzzle you can find in your own country (and although my experience
of Aussie puzzles is slim, I don't recall seeing any better than the
Stickler), but try a bit of the best foreign crossword culture too.
Although the Times can be tough, you can get used to its style, and
as a consistently well-written puzzle, it's very tough to beat.

For similar reasons, I'd advise any crossword fan visiting the
US to have a go at the New York Times puzzle or bring back a book
of its puzzles. Although it too has local stuff that can make it
very difficult, it shows what can be done in non-cryptic puzzles.
(And the increase in difficulty over the week means you have an
excuse if you get nowhere with a Friday or Saturday puzzle.)

Information from others who get the syndicated Times indicate
about a 2-week delay. You can check my daily blog for details
of the trickier clues. To avoid seeing information before you
need it, use this link.

This is a reasonable crossword for free
